Free Hat Pattern – Basic Beanie

Here is a free hat pattern that I have written specifically for using my repeatable corespun yarns or beaded yarns. Lots of people are attracted to the colours and textures of my repeatable art yarns but are unsure of what to do with them or how to use them. These yarns have lots of potential as accent yarns to provide a pop of colour or texture within garments or accessories being knitted with more traditional yarns. For small projects like hats, hand warmers, shawlettes and cowls, my art yarns can step up and take center stage.

You will need:

• 2 skeins of Araminta Greaves Fibreista beaded or corespun yarn. You can choose from many different colourways.
• 9mm 40cm circular needle
• 10mm circular needle
• Stitch marker

Method:

Cast on 32 stitches using the long tail method and the 9mm needle.

Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches, place marker.

K2 P2 rib for 5 rounds.

Change to 10mm needles and just plain knit stitch until work measures about 15cm from the cast on edge. Remove marker.

(K5 K2tog) repeat until 14 stitches remain. You may have to use the magic loop method as the diameter of the hat get smaller but this is a very simple technique which you will find explained in lots of YouTube tutorials.

(K2tog) until 7 stitches remain.

Cut yarn and thread tail back through the 7 stitches. Slide the stitches off the needle. Weave in the yarn ends.

Enjoy your cosy hat.

Having taken the time and trouble to make your lovely hat do make sure that you look after it carefully. Wool has amazing self cleaning properties but you may need to wash your hat occasionally. Use cool or tepid water and just a tiny bit of delicates laundry liquid. Gently push the hat down into the water and leave it to soak for an hour or so. Pour the water away, gently squeeze the hat and put it in clean, cool water. Gently press it down into the water so the soap can come out. Pour the water away and gently squeeze the hat. Roll it up in a clean towel to absorb excess moisture then lay it out to dry flat. Any temperature extremes or agitation will cause your hat to felt.
