With the easing of Lockdown restrictions on the horizon I am excited about restarting my felting workshops in North Cornwall. I have teamed up with two venues initially to offer a range of both needle felting and wet felting workshops.

Wet Felt Seascape
In this workshop I guide participants through the processes involved in creating a wet felt picture inspired by the sea. Where ever you are in Cornwall, you are never far from the sea. The north Cornish coast is particularly rugged with towering cliffs and tiny bays. The sea is always changing colour according to the light and the movement of the water. There is always something new to see even if you are looking at the same view every day.
In this workshop participants will be able to work from their own inspiration, a picture they have brought with them or one of mine. I will demonstrate how to mix colours and textures to create the different aspects of the seascape. Also I will show how to lay out the fibres to make good felt. I bring lots of different fibres, both commercially dyed and my own hand dyed. Much of the fibre I use comes from small flocks close to home. Then I will guide participants through the wetting, soaping and rolling processes so that the fibres they have laid down can mesh together to form a beautiful felt picture.

Needle Felt Landscape Workshop

This is always a popular workshop. It is such a joy to paint with wool. I always think it is a bit like working with incredibly cooperative watercolours. In this workshop I introduce the participants to the different qualities of different types of natural fibres. Some are good to use for textured areas like tree bark or leaves. Some fibres are more suited to the smoothness of the sky. I bring a vast array of fibres with me for participants to choose from, Merino, Romney, Blue Face Leicester, silk, alpaca etc. Some are commercially processed and dyed and some are my hand dyed fibres from small local flocks.
Participants will be able to work from their own inspiration, a picture they have brought with them or one of mine. I will show how to lay out fibres to depict different elements of everyone’s chosen scenes. Also I will demonstrate how to use the felting needle safely and without breaking them as they are very fragile. I bring lots of beads and bits and pieces that participants can sew on as embellishments once the felting is finished.

Wet Felt Vessels Workshop

This workshop is an introduction to felting with a resist. Participants will learn how to lay fibres around a resist and how to work the felt into a 3D object. We will make a bowl but the techniques are versatile and can be used to make bags, pouches, or even scaled up for cat caves. Again, I bring lots of fibres in lots of colours so participants can create their own designs. I think it is important to give people the opportunity to create their own designs in all my workshops. I like to teach the techniques and to facilitate people to bring their own ideas to life. This means that people will take home an object or picture that means something to them rather than just a copy of someone else’s idea.
