~ 100g of lovely hand dyed Romney roving in blue, green and yellow.
This colourway was inspired by the blue tits at the bird feeders in the Rowan tree outside my Spinnery window.
This really is some very special fibre. Sourced from a small, pampered flock which grazes fields overlooking the sea here in North Cornwall. The fibre has been scoured and carded at a small fibre mill less than 20 miles away. A truly local product that supports a very small scale producer.
Use Hand Dyed Romney Roving for …
I love using this hand dyed Romney roving. It almost spins itself and makes a really useful yarn, great for jumpers, cardigans, hats, socks or bags. It is quite resilient and hard wearing without being particularly scratchy. For the technical people out there I would say it has a micron count of between 30 and 35. I have also had great results from this fibre when wet felting vessels, creating small pots that hold their shape well. For 2D needle felting Romney is useful for areas where you are looking to add some texture. In 3D needle felting the fibres come together to create a firm form quite quickly.
If more than one braid is available, the same dyes and techniques will have been used but each braid will be unique.
My Process.
I have developed my small batch hand dyeing method so I can avoid single use plastics and minimize water and energy usage. I dye using acid dyes, fixed with heat and fully exhausted so nothing nasty goes down the drain to my septic tank.
Whilst photographing this product I have done my best to present the colours as they are in real life. Please bear in mind that monitors differ so accuracy may vary.
